7 Ways to Protect Your Skin from Pollution

READ THE JOURNAL

Living in big cities surely can make the inhibitants prone to pollution. Exposure to pollutants in the long run can wreak havoc on our health including the skin. Microscopic particles of dust and smoke floating around in the air, called free radicals, can penetrate the skin barrier and damage cells over time by encouraging oxidation. This may dry skin out, cause hyperpigmentation, inflammation, as well as breaking down collagen and accelerate the aging process, especially when combined with UVA and UVB sun damage. Therefore, the efforts put to maintain your skin health is important. On this week's journal, we will be explaining a few tips you can do to protect your skin from pollution. Read on!

1. Apply protection

Following a skincare regimen that fits your daily necessity may help to create layers of protection on top of your skin. Moreover, applying sun protection onto your skin can also help safeguard the skin from UV-induced damage. Sunscreen can also help trap smog particles, prevent these harmful chemicals from penetrating deep into the skin and ruin skin appearance.

If you're wearing makeup, consider using a setting spray that can shield your skin from pollutants, like Studio Tropik's Dream Setter. Made with Marrubium vulgare extract that is known to prevent dust, smoke and free radicals from seeping into the skin. Aside from the protecting properties, its micro-mist technology also helps to hold your makeup for up to 16 hours.

2. Cleanse diligently

Cleansing your skin thoroughly every day is important to remove surface residue such as your makeup, dirt, excess oils and any chemicals you may have come into contact with during the day. Some people even go to an extent of double cleansing. This is acceptable, as it can also help you get rid of pollutants and impurities that may have grazed your skin.

3. Scrub frequently

Pollution and dirt may create a layer of chemical build-up on the skin that can possibly lead to inflammation. Therefore, cleansing in the morning and night is necessary in order to maintain blemish-free and healthy skin. Other than that, doing regular exfoliation to your skin can help deep clean your pores, avoid dull appearance and guard against the negative effects of pollution.

4. Moisturise your skin

Whether your skin is dry, oily, or somewhere in between, moisturising the skin is mandatory to help keep the skin moist and hydrated, as well as creating a barrier on the skin surface that can protect you from pollutants. Some moisturizers even can provide your skin with antioxidant support to fight inflammation caused by free radicals.

5. Hydrate adequately

While moisturizer acts as an external hydration for the skin, internal hydration in the form of water is equally important to maintain healthy skin and help flush out toxins from inside the body. Drink at least 2 liters of water everyday. You can also snack on fresh fruits with high water content throughout the day to ensure optimal hydration, as well as fulfill daily vitamin and mineral intake that may improve the skin from within.

6. Consume enough antioxidants

Antioxidants that are found in fresh produce like fruits and vegetables can help fend off free radical damage, resulting in a healthier-looking skin from within. Therefore, maintain a balanced diet by incorporating fruits and vegetables. You can also obtain antioxidants in a form of skin care products. Cleansers, moisturizers and serums that contain antioxidants like green tea, vitamin C and E can help repair your skin and protect it from future damage.

7. Supplement your skin

As mentioned on previous point, consuming antioxidant can help improve skin condition big time. Not to mention, health supplements can also take a role to help you achieve this goal. For example, consuming natural supplement like Herbana's Relief Sari Kulit Manggis may help in reducing inflammation inside the body. Its antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties may also help build a better immune system, as well as protecting skin health from within.
