5 Simple Ways to Protect Liver Health

READ THE JOURNAL

As the body's primary filter along with the kidneys, liver function is important to detoxify the body from toxins. When your liver is functioning less than ideal, you may have toxin buildup inside the body and increased risk of liver damage. The liver is also responsible to break down fats in the body, as well as storing excess glucose you obtain from food. Therefore, it is very important to maintain liver health, and there are certainly simple ways to do it. On this week's journal, we will be explaining a number of ways you can implement in order to have a healthy and well-functioning liver. Read on!

1. Consume enough water every day

Similar to maintaining kidney health, water is also beneficial for keeping your liver working optimally. Water helps liver and kidneys to flush toxins out of the body through urine and sweat, thus enough consumption of water per day is essential to keep a healthy liver. A number of factors like, age, gender, weight, as well as fitness level, all help to determine how much water your body needs. However, experts suggest to consume at least 2 liters of water every day, and that doesn't include other types of beverages, just plain water. When you don't consume enough water, the body becomes dehydrated and your blood tend to become thicker, making it harder for the liver to perform its primary function.

2. Get a good night's sleep

Sleep is also important when it comes to maintaining overall health, including ensuring a healthy liver function. When you sleep, the body not only regulates your metabolism as well as repairs and replaces cells, but also aid proper detoxification process of all the toxins you've accumulated throughout the day. This detoxifying effect of sleep is therefore very crucial in establishing a proper liver function. The lymphatic system also works alongside liver to flush out toxins, making you feel more refreshed and restored the next day you wake up.

3. Reduce exposure to toxins

As a part of protecting your liver health, another thing that is important other than managing the effects is to prevent it from happening. This can be done through minimizing your exposure to toxins. There are lots of things you can do, like reducing consumption of processed foods, quitting your smoking habit and limiting or cutting off alcohol intake. The latter is closely tied to one another, as alcohol is known to reduce liver function when taken in an extended period of time. When alcohol consumption goes unregulated, it can further cause a condition called cirrhosis, which is when liver cells begin to swell and cause scarring.

4. Consume medications wisely

For some people with existing medical conditions, medications are prescribed to help alleviate or prevent certain symptoms from happening. However, keep in mind to always be aware of medications you are consuming, especially if it's over-the-counter or if you're taking more than one prescription doses at a time. Some types of medications might hurt liver health in the long run, therefore always keep in mind to regulate yourselves when consuming these things or consulting with a medical professional before taking prescribed medications.

5. Aid the body with nutritious foods and supplements

The body primarily needs a good supply of nutrition from foods in order to maintain its overall health. Taking care of your liver falls in a similar manner, as a diet that is rich in natural ingredients lessens the work of liver to get rid of toxins. Research shows that a high fiber diet as well as reducing salt, fat, and sugar intake, can all contribute to a better functioning liver. Fiber plays a role in preventing liver problems that is caused by inflammation, poor fat digestion, and high cholesterol levels (fatty liver disease).

Processed food, such as foods high in salt and/or sugar, also tend to wreak havoc on the body, including your liver function when consumed regularly. High sugar consumption, for example, is known to cause imbalances in your blood sugar levels, and may trigger development of diabetes type 2. While it is acceptable to consume sweet treats every now and then, reducing them to a minimum should be ideal in order to maintain liver and gut health.

A type of food that can be beneficial to both your digestion and liver health are fermented foods. Rich in probiotics, foods like yogurt, kimchi, and pickles may help aid your digestive system by balancing your gut flora, providing good bacteria to combat the overload of bad bacteria. However, you need to be mindful when consuming them as too much of fermented foods may overload your liver, especially when you already have existing liver problems.

Just like certain foods are supportive of optimal liver function, some natural supplements also can help the liver process things more effectively. Herbana's Relief Sari Temulawak and Relief Sari Kayu Manis are both known to support healthy liver functions. Made from 100% natural herb extracts, these natural supplements can be consumed regularly without any significant side effects.
