8 Easy Steps to Take Towards a Healthier New Year

READ THE JOURNAL

As we are fast approaching the end of the year, it is almost a tradition to have a list of new year's resolutions, be it in a personal area of your life, work, even health. It is fairly simple to build a list of things you aim to do or achieve in the new year, but how long is it going to last in your priority list? For this week's journal, we have enlisted some easy habits to be implemented for a healthier you in 2018. Read on!

1. Write out your goals/reasons

Every plan comes with a goal, including your plans to have a healthier physique. It's especially helpful to specify why you are making this lifestyle change, and write those reasons down! You might be thinking of losing weight or simply just to improve your energy levels. As you crystallize these thoughts into writing, you will be constantly reminded of why you are doing a lifestyle change, even when having a tough day and sticking to the resolutions seems tough.

2. Shop for healthy ingredients

Nothing can replace the vitamins and minerals your body gets from fresh fruits and vegetables. Apart from fibre, the antioxidants fruits and veggies are rich in protect you from inflammations and various other illnesses. Therefore, make a list of things that you should ideally have in your kitchen to be able to make healthy meals and snacks. This list should consist mainly of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. You should stick to supermarket aisles that contain fresh produce rather than the centre aisles that generally display the processed, canned and packaged options.

3. Consume less processed food

As the pointer above stated, try your best to steer away from everything that is in a packet or in a can. Commonly, these items contain significant amounts of preservatives and additives and are generally high in sugar and sodium which are not good for health.

4. Cook your own meals

This step might be tricky depending of what kind of person you are. If you're someone who enjoy cooking, then it will be no problem. But what if you are one of those people who find it a hassle to chop up onions? You can either order healthier take-outs that are not pizza or any of those fast food type, or you can make this a challenge for the new year and start making your own meals. I'd personally suggest the latter; it's a worthy skill to have and makes a good investment in the long run.

Make use of the internet to get some simple recipes where you can get a step-by-step breakdown of ingredients and instructions. It definitely makes it easier for you to cook something delicious and healthy.

5. Plan for the week ahead

Now that you've decided to cook for yourself, make an effort to shop for the necessary ingredients during the weekend and stock up on your healthy snack options. If you have a busy schedule during the weekdays, it might be preferable to cook in larger quantities so that you can store the food either for lunch the next day or even dinner.

6. Increase your water intake

This is one of the simplest step on the list. Remind yourself to drink two to three litres of water every day. Whether it is scorching hot outside or you're just sitting in an airconditioned office cubicle, you will still need constant hydration to amp up your metabolism. Try to not leave the house without a water bottle, and if you're feeling adventurous, you can also create your own infused water by adding some slices of lemons, berries, peaches or oranges.

7. Work out your way to a healthier figure

Although it has been mentioned countless times in our journals, exercise remains one of the top habits you should maintain in order to achieve a healthier lifestyle. Keep in mind that your exercise preference might be different to everyone else, and you shouldn't force yourself to fit to a standard just because everyone is doing it.

Mould your exercise habits to your personal preference; for example, if you don't like going to the gym, just do sports that you can enjoy with friends or do simple cardio exercises that you can even do at the comfort of your own home. Also, exercises aren't just limited to sports. You can also implement this by taking extra steps at your office or dancing to your favorite songs. By doing the things you love, it will make a whole difference in sticking to your New Year's resolutions.

8. Give supplements a chance

With all the healthy eating habits you've put yourself through, it will never hurt to have extra shield to avoid illnesses by consuming supplements. Our range of Relief Sari herbal supplements offers a broad option to cater to your needs, from immune boosting to lactation support. However, keep in mind to consult with your doctor before taking any supplements to avoid any possible side effects.
