5 Ways to Get Healthier Skin

BACA JURNAL

As the largest organ in the human body, skin health is very important in our overall well-being. Did you know that there is more to the process towards healthy glowing skin than just applying all-natural topical skincare that often could break the bank? As a matter of fact, there are a lot of factors that contribute to improve the quality of your skin. We have compiled a list of helpful habits that are very beneficial for achieving that natural glow on your skin.

1. Protect Your Skin from The Sun

According to a study, most of the changes seen in aging skin are actually "caused by a lifetime of sun exposure". To protect yourself from the sun, these following methods are recommended, including avoiding the sun during high intensity hours (between 10 am and 4 pm), using a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) higher than 15 and wearing long sleeved cotton shirts, long trousers and a hat with a wide brim if needed.

2. Eat the Right Foods

Getting enough nutrients by eating the right food has been proven to rejuvenate skin from the inside. There are a number of nutrients useful for healthy, glowing skin, such as Vitamin C. Helpful in aiding collagen production in the body, vitamin C found in oranges and tomatoes can maintain the elasticity of the skin. It can prevent wrinkles and stalling the process of aging.

Other important component is antioxidant. For example, beta-carotene is converted into vitamin A inside the body and is helpful in repairing skin tissues, attacks free radicals and prevents pigmentation and uneven skin tone. Carotenoids and antioxidants in contained in broccoli and carrots conditions and protects the skin to enhance immunity against harmful sun rays, and heal sunburns.

In Indonesia, mangosteen pericarp or kulit manggis is one of the highest source of antioxidants and have been used traditionally to keep the skin glowing and healthy.  Our Relief Sari Kulit Manggis is an extraction of Kulit Manggis' active compounds called Xanthones which is packed with antioxidants and fights off free radicals to promote a better immunity as well as healthy, glowing skin.

3. Avoid consuming excessive alcohol and smoking

Both alcohol consumption and smoking as closely related with internal illness, including affecting the health of your skin.

Drinking alcohol can make your body and skin dehydrated, leaving the skin looking old and tired. It is recommended for people who constantly consume alcohol to stick to sensible amounts and drink plenty of water.

Meanwhile, research shows that smoking ages skin rapidly. The activity speeds up skin degradation, causing wrinkles as well as reduces skin's natural elasticity by promoting the breakdown of collagen and reducing the amount that is produced. This happens because smoking causes the tiny blood vessels in the skin to tighten, which reduces the amount of oxygen and nutrients that the skin cells receive.

4. Clean your skin regularly

Cleansing is an important part of skin care because it removes dirt and bacteria; and the key is to do it gently. Using warm water to wash your face is beneficial as water that is too cold or too hot strips oils from your skin. Also, use mild rather than strong soaps and avoid irritating additives such as perfumes and colorants, especially if you have sensitive skin.

It is especially important for women to remove their makeup before going to bed as makeup residues can damage the skin. When removing makeup, you might want to take care with the delicate skin around the eyes, and if you use waterproof makeup you may need an oil-based product to make sure you get it all off.

5. Get enough quality sleep

Sleep is essential for healthy skin. Not enough quality sleep will make your skin look tired and older, especially with bags under your eyes. Poor quality sleep can become a vicious cycle because lack of sleep makes you irritable, anxious and depressed, and that makes it harder to get good sleep.

Make sure you have plenty of physical exercise as this reduces stress and creates a healthy tiredness that helps sleep. Exercise also increases the oxygen circulating in your body which helps the skin stay vibrant and healthy.
