10 Foods and Herbs to Boost your Immune System

We live in an increasingly fast paced world. During our busy work lives, sometimes we simply cannot afford to fall sick. But despite our efforts to be as hygienic as possible, we are surrounded by bacteria and viruses everywhere we go. How then would we equip ourselves for the battle? We need some sort of shield, and that happens to be our immune system. Our entire body works together holistically in order to protect itself from outside intruders. It is crucial to make sure that our immune system doesn’t fall weak. Working so hard every day, our immune system certainly needs all the help it can get. We’ve compiled a list of foods and herbs that you can consume in lend your first line of defense a helping hand. 

1. Yogurt

This probiotic-packed gem is essential to keep our digestion healthy. Probiotics are basically good bacteria that keeps the gut healthy. It lines and safeguards our intestinal walls from unhealthy bacteria and germs. Consuming yogurt in a constant basis can also promote white blood cells production, thus keeping us safe from threats like viruses and germs.

2. Green Tea

Antioxidants in green tea are beneficial in generally strengthening the immune system, keeping it running normally and protects it from damages caused by free radicals. Polyphenols found in green tea have anti-inflammatory properties, resulting in a fundamental change in immune system response that could be beneficial in managing autoimmune diseases. 

3. Lemon

It is recommended to drink lemon juice every morning to boost your immune system. Nutrients in lemon, such as Vitamin C, is essential to fight viruses and bacteria. Lemons are also high in potassium, which is good for heart health, as well as brain and nerve function. Though, this fruit is ofter misunderstood for causing gastric problems. In fact, lemon aids indigestion, heartburn and cleanses toxins in your body.

4. Ginger

Acting as a cleanser for the lymphatic system, ginger can stop the accumulation of toxins. Ginger boosts the immune system because it contains strong antioxidants and relieves inflammation. Ginger also works in keeping our gut health in check. Maintaining gut health is crucial in keeping away dangerous bacteria and viruses from entering the body.

5. Honey

Honey contains polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants that have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. Studies have shown that a daily dose of raw, natural honey raises levels of health-promoting antioxidants in the body. Antioxidants help block free radicals in the body that cause disease. It also boosts the immune system, acting as a preventative against any number of diseases. 

6. Garlic

Despite its pungent smell, garlic is known to fight off free radicals and eating it regularly can protect against the development of cancer. A food which has been known and used for centuries to improve the immune system, garlic also reduces cholesterol levels and prevent the hardening of arteries. The immune-boosting properties of garlic derives from one of its sulfur-containing compounds called allicin.

7. Turmeric

An anti-inflammatory root that can help boost immunity by fighting inflammation, curcumin that is contained in turmeric is an antiviral and antifungal compound that also acts as an antioxidant. While cooking, pair turmeric with black pepper to increase the absorption of good nutrients in the body. Turmeric also contains anti bacterial compounds that can protect your gut from bacteria like E.Coli.

8. Black Seed

Jinten Hitam or Black seed is the go to herb when you are feeling under the weather. Jinten hitam works well to boost the immune system by increasing the production of immune cells. It is also packed with antioxidants and phytonutrients.

9. Mangosteen Pericarp

The mangosteen pericarp is rich in Xanthones, a group of compounds, which have antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
